Humboldt Co. Sheriff’s Office Press Release:
On 12-09-2012, approximately 6:15 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call for assistance from California State Parks regarding four people, including a five year old male and a seventeen year old female, being lost in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The lost hikers had a cell phone and called 911 asking for assistance. The hikers told the dispatcher they had no water or food with them.
California State Parks requested assistance from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office in locating the lost hikers.
Humboldt County Sheriff Search and Rescue Deputies and volunteers, and a State Park Ranger responded to the scene near Albee Creek Campground. At approximately 8:30 p.m. the hikers were located. They were all in good health and did not need medical assistance.
The Sheriffs Office would like to remind hikers to tell family and friends where they are hiking, when they expect to return, bring appropriate equipment and clothing. This time of year the weather conditions can change rapidly. Wet and cold weather can cause hypothermia. A cell phone, map or GPS is also very helpful. Keep in mind not all rural areas have cell phone coverage and a cell phone batteries need to be fully charged.
