And she’s not running for the two-year remainder of Shane Brinton’s term. Pereira says she’d like to make Arcata the first zero-waste city in the county. Here’s the press release, which arrived late last night:

Sofia Pereira, a former Humboldt State University (HSU) Associated Students President and former field representative for Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro, has been confirmed as the first candidate to qualify for the November 4th general municipal election to elect two City Council members for a four-year term.

“Arcata has a rich history of innovation and collaboration,” said Pereira. “I want to bring a new generation of leadership to the City Council so we can continue Arcata’s legacy of being an environmental and economic leader. I’m running to make Arcata the first zero-waste city in Humboldt County, improve our relationship with our community partners like Humboldt State University, and increase our use of technology so that residents can engage with the city and access information easily.”

Pereira plans to officially kick-off her campaign at a later date. “Right now I’m focused on hearing people’s ideas on how to make Arcata even greater” said Pereira.

Two four-year seats will be on the November ballot as well as one two-year term. The Arcata City Council voted for a special election to coincide with the November 4th general election to fill the remaining two years of Shane Brinton’s term.

Pereira has set up a website: www.sofiapereira.org where residents can contact her. “I’ll be out in the community a lot and making myself available through technology as well to make sure people can reach me at their convenience too.”
