First things first: We should acknowledge that the video above was produced by MERRY JANE, the marijuana-themed website (or “pot-flavored lifestyle media platform,” if you prefer) launched by the one and only Snoop Dogg. Giggle if you want, but if there’s one thing Snoop has proved over the years it’s that he’s serious about that real sticky icky icky. (See here for all your Snoop weed meme needs.)

Sure enough, Snoop’s website, which launched a few months back, has begun posting polished, well-produced news videos about the industry in a series called Seed to Strain. The latest one takes a look at SC Labs, one of the private testing facilities that have popped up in California to test the potency and safety of medical cannabis. SC Labs is used by at least one local dispensary, Arcata’s Humboldt Patient Resource Center, which ships all of its weed to the company’s Santa Cruz lab for testing before selling it.

The absence of regulation in California has meant that there’s no governmental requirement for quality control, let alone a department assigned to oversee that task. “There is no safety testing, which is the primary role of a Health Department,” Nate Winokur, a regional manager at SC Labs, says in the video. “SC Labs is essentially taking the place of a Health Department.”

Of course, the situation is about to change. On Jan 1, 2016, the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act will take effect. After that date, medical marijuana distributors and testing facilities will be required to get licenses, and they will be overseen by the California Department of Public Health.

Hopefully that doesn’t harsh Snoop’s high.
