The Sheriff’s Office was called to a tense scene on McKinleyville’s Hiller Avenue this afternoon, after the office receive a report about a despondent man armed with a shotgun threatening to kill himself.

Witnesses reported seeing officers with their guns drawn at Hiller just east of the 101 overpass starting a little after 1:15 p.m., and for a time Sheriff’s Office communications were on “Code 33” – the signal used during emergency situations.

There was one report of audible shots fired from the location, but the situation seems to have ended peacefully, with one person taken into custody. Until a few minutes ago, deputies were still at the scene on the high-traffic McKinleyville thoroughfare, questioning witnesses. Deputies declined to speak to an Outpost reporter on the scene, and office administration could not be reached for comment.
