Arletta Masterson passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2017 with her loving husband of 70 years, Allen, and her family at her side.

Arletta was born in Red Bluff to Mildred and George Vogel on March 29, 1927. She grew up in the Redding area, living at Iron Mountain until her early teens. She attended Shasta High School, South Fork High School and graduated from Arcata High School in 1946.

Arletta was a musician and artist in her early life and often helped her uncle stock the Marble Mountain lakes with trout by horseback and mules. Later she focused on painting and became a skilled landscape painter. Her beautiful and detailed images of Northern California are treasured by family and friends. She particularly loved Trinidad Head and created several beautiful images from differing vantage points and seasons.

Arletta was a gifted quilter and seamstress. She meticulously hand-quilted her pieced, appliqued and embroidered blocks. She designed her own patterns of embroidery and quilting stitches. She was most proud of her Flowers of America quilt — she designed 50 blocks with the state flowers hand-embroidered, in relief the background blocks had hand-quilted maps of America.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and George Vogel, her brother Robert, her sister Betty, and an infant son Gary. Two daughters-in-law, Diana (Kelly) and Vicki (Mike) also preceded her. Arletta is survived by her husband, Allen, and her children Michael (Eugenia), John Patrick (Suzie), Maureen, Tim (Allison) and Kelly. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ryan (Christina), Amanda (Jacob), Jennifer (Nancy), Lisa (Brian), Johnathan (Ernie), Jacob, Alyssa, Allison, and Ryan. Arletta was blessed by her great-grandchildren Wyatt, Julianna, Emmett, Elijah, and Jace. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Vera.

Her life was full of fun and devoted friends, particularly her breakfast group which began as an exercise group back in the 1970s.

The family wishes to thank her caregiver Pam Notter and the staff of Hospice of Humboldt.

Funeral arrangements are by Paul’s Chapel , a private interment will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday April 1st from 1-4 p.m. at the Fiesta Grill & Cantina in Arcata; friends and family are welcome.
