Fortuna Police Department press release:

Several Fortuna residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to represent PG&E.

According to the individuals who reported receiving these calls, the calls originated from an identical phone number with a 415 prefix. The caller claimed to be a representative of the utility company and advised that service would be shut off if they did not resolve their case by paying.

When the number is called, it has a recording that is identical to PG&E’s customer service phone line. However, when a choice is selected it redirects the caller to someone who says that it is the “billing department.” We have verified that this is not PG&E!

If you have concerns about the legitimacy of a call you have received about a past due bill, call PG&E immediately at 1-833-500-7226.
This is a direct phone number to report these types of calls. However, you may have to wait for some time to go through various recorded messages, and be placed on hold.

PG&E’s Credit Department will never ask for personal information, a credit card number or a gift card number over the phone. If you have received such a phone call and provided credit card or checking account information should report it immediately to your credit card company or bank and law enforcement.

Other callers, this morning, have reported receiving phone calls in which they have been addressed by their own name. The caller then refers them to an internet link.

If you receive a similar call, you are urged not to click on the link. Please do a screen capture, print the capture and report it to the Fortuna Police Department, or the law enforcement agency in your jurisdiction.
