Humboldt Eats Beans For MLK Day

Hopefully you are pondering the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. somewhere other than work today (wink!). Maybe go watch Selma if you haven’t already. It does what it’s supposed to. Of course, you could also gather with your fellow Humboldtians at a smattering of events:

  • Arcata: Once again, the City of Arcata is sponsoring the Bowl of Beans dinner, taking place this year at the Arcata Community Center — located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, fittingly — beginning at 5 p.m. In addition to a simple beans and rice (and cornbread!) dinner, the event will feature performances by the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir, Asha Nan and storyteller Baba Jamal Koram. $6.
  • Eureka: Humboldt’s NAACP chapter will host a smaller celebration ‘round noon at the Adorni Center in Eureka, featuring MLK-themed speechifying as well as more Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir.
  • SoHum: The Mateel Community Center is serving up a small meal to benefit local youth programs while also screening Michael Mann’s 2001 film Ali because, uh … Ali, bomaye!
