Thursday Lowdown: Fundraiser for Film About Syrian Refugees in the U.S. in Arcata Tonight

With holiday dumbness in the rearview, Humboldt life is starting to return to a customary gait. Let’s start getting together again, shall we? Hey, look! This Humboldt Thursday contains a wealth of community-binding options, with Humboldt Surfrider’s regular Ocean Night Film Screening and A Reason to Listen’s latest Humboldt Poetry Slam being prime examples of encouraging soul gatherings. You could probably wrangle a hug or two at either.

Deric in Jordan

Filed under less-commonplace highlights, over at The Jam, chums and wellwishers of longtime Humboldt musician/writer/philosopher/Northtown Books guy Deric Mendes will gather to support his newest endeavor. What’s he up to, you inquire? Well, Mendes is in the process of gathering footage, stories and funds for a documentary looking at the struggles of Syrian migrants and refugees living in the United States as they cope with their country’s decimation from war while facing misguided Islamophobia in America. Mendes was inspired to pursue the project after traveling to Jordan three years ago to cover the refugee crisis caused by the Syrian Civil War.

Money raised for the documentary titled Watani Ana, (which translates to “I Am My Homeland”) will be used to pursue higher film production values as well as to cover travel costs for additional filming.

Thursday night’s benefit will feature performances by The Lost Luvs, Matt Jackson and DJ Red and will be hosted by one-time Mr. Humboldt John McClurg. More details on Mendes’ Watani Ana can be found at its associated Kickstarter page and/or in the preview clip below.

Details on that and events with less global implications can be found in your Lowdown listings below.
