Like many rural fire departments, WVFD receives no tax dollars and is entirely staffed by volunteers and funded exclusively through donations and the occasional grant. Founded in 1950, the department responds to over 100 calls per year, including structure fires, vegetation fires, medical emergencies, and vehicle accidents.
