Shoshanna looking festive on the Arcata Plaza

Shoshanna is Holding Up

‘Tis the first day of May, or May Day — a day that many cultures historically celebrate with festivities to welcome the spring. And in Arcata this May Day also marks the beginning of festival season, with the town’s first official outdoor party of the year kicking off on the plaza today. For Rose Anthony, better known as Shoshanna, that means it’s time to get to work making Arcata as fun and magical as she possibly can.

On this week’s episode of Humboldt Holding Up — the Outpost‘s pandemic-era podcast that is somehow still a thing — Shoshanna talks about her work with Arcata Main Street to help bring back live events, what the Oyster Festival will look like this year and how the City of Arcata is using COVID grant funding to help support event planners and performers.

Shoshanna also discusses her work as a longtime local belly dancer, instructor and founder of Redwood Raks World Dance Studio, her general love for Arcata and her desire to make it the place to be.

And if you are reading this in time, make sure to head on down to the Arcata Plaza today (Sunday, May 1) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the May Day Celebration, featuring live music, vendors, a may pole dance, a butterfly parade and a special wedding ceremony!
