Virgil "Bob" Hedlund 1927-2024

This is an obituary for our dear loved one:
Virgil Robert Hedlund, “Bob”
November 12th, 1927 - April 16th, 2024 - 96 years
Born in Silver Creek Nebraska, Died in Redding, CA

Bob Hedlund passed away April 16th, 2024 in Redding CA at the age of 96. A husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he is survived by his children, Terri & Don Sible, Patrick Hedlund, Elizabeth Swindell-Hedlund, Shawn & Gary Gundlach, grandchildren Andrew Sible, Jacquie Kelly, Danielle, Dillon, Dalton and Drake Hedlund, Heidi, Cory, and Serra Gundlach, siblings Fern Magrini and Lee Hedlund, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his son, Mike Hedlund.

Bob grew up on a farm in Silver Creek, Nebraska with his parents and six siblings before moving to California and graduating from Santa Rosa High School in 1945. Bob joined the Army shortly after graduating, and opened a barber shop upon returning to Eureka, CA. He later joined the Navy Reserves and Coast Guard as a cook.

As a retired veteran, Bob spent most of his time woodworking, carving, crafting, building, drawing, and baking bread. He was well known for his tasty braided bread loaves and rye bread, handcrafted tables, ornate knives and boxes, scrimshaw art, bone combs, and would often give them as gifts to loved ones.

Always with a story to tell, Bob would grab your attention to weave a tale or pull your leg, followed by a cheeky smirk. Having a gift for gab, he could talk for hours, and as he put it, “It’s harder to remember than it is to forget.”

Bob was beloved by many. He will be deeply missed and remembered as an artistic and thoughtful jokester, caring father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend.
