Part-time Maintenance Trainee (Parks/Facilities/Natural Resources)

GENERAL INFORMATION: The City of Arcata Environmental Services Department’s Community Services Division is now accepting applications for five Maintenance Trainee positions to assist in the maintenance of City parks, public buildings, and natural resource areas. Under close supervision and pursuant to specific training, performs varied manual and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of City facilities, parks, and natural resources areas, such as the Bayside Park Farm, Community Forest, and the Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. Two of the five positions will be assigned specifically to assist with the Bayside Park Educational Farm operational duties.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Learns and assists in:
• Routine cleaning and maintenance of City parks, facilities, and natural resource areas;
• Performing janitorial work in City buildings;
• Using hand and power tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, hand and power saws, mowers, and line trimmers, in the upkeep of City parks and landscaping;
• Mowing lawns, sweeping rubbish, raking and weeding grounds, and trimming trees;
• Assisting with Bayside Park Educational Farm operations, including planting, tilling, weeding, harvesting, irrigation, and providing customer service assistance to garden plot customers and farm shareholders;
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years of age, responsible, dependable and able to use safe work practices. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and carry such weight for at least 50 feet. Aptitude to learn, use and maintain hand and power tools used in cleaning and maintenance activities. Ability to carry hand-held devices while walking on sidewalks and uneven ground. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to read, understand and interpret written instructions. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of individuals and the public. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. Ability to operate a motor or electric vehicle. Must possess a valid California Drivers License and have clean driving record.
SALARY RANGE: $12.43 to $14.39 per hour
HOURS: Approximately 40 hours per week; Monday – Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Occasional weekend hours may also be required.
