Maintenance Trainee- Water/Wastewater

GENERAL INFORMATION: The City of Arcata Environmental Services Department’s Water/Wastewater Division is now accepting applications for a Maintenance Trainee position to assist in the maintenance of City facilities and surrounding grounds. Under close supervision and pursuant to specific training, performs varied manual and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of City facilities, and surrounding areas, such as the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Sewer Lift Stations, and Water Booster Stations/Tanks.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Learns and assists in:
• Routine cleaning and maintenance of City facilities, and surrounding grounds;
• Using hand and power tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, hand and power saws, mowers, and line trimmers, in the upkeep of City facilities and landscaping;
• Mowing lawns, sweeping rubbish, raking and weeding grounds, and trimming trees;
• Pressure washing and painting City facilities, buildings, and equipment;
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years of age, responsible, dependable and able to use safe work practices. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and carry such weight for at least 50 feet. Aptitude to learn, use and maintain hand and power tools used in cleaning and maintenance activities. Ability to carry hand-held devices while walking on sidewalks and uneven ground. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to read, understand and interpret written instructions. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of individuals and the public. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. Willingness to work around wastewater that is foul smelling. Ability to operate a motor or electric vehicle. Must possess a valid California Drivers License and have clean driving record.
SALARY RANGE: $14.49 to $15.61 per hour
HOURS: Between 20 to 40 hours per week; Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
