Family Support Specialist

The Family Resource Center (FRC) Family Support Specialist will provide specific services and track outcomes in connection with Humboldt County’s Social Services programs including, but not limited to: Child Welfare Services, CalWORKs, CalFresh, as well as, Southern Humboldt Unified School District, SoHum Healthcare District, and the Humboldt Network of Family Resource Centers.

Essential Functions

Strengthen families through family-centered, community-based, culturally and linguistically responsive, trauma-informed approaches and buffering supports, including expanded access to home visiting and support to parents/caregivers.
Support community to increase immediate access to basic needs and promote integrated systems that result in more accessible and responsive services for children and families.
Create a comprehensive and integrated delivery system of information and services to promote early childhood development.
Support parenting education, child health and wellness, early childcare and education, and family support services.
Carry a caseload of referred families from Child Welfares Services, Differential Response Program.

Emotional intelligence and empathy when working with clients.
Effective communication skills to work with a variety of clients, including active listening skills
Critical-thinking skills to evaluate all the dynamics of a family or service needed.
Organizational skills to work with multiple families at once. Organize paperwork and electronic files and make sure each case is updated with the correct information, across different systems. Will need to prioritize cases based on client needs and emergency status.
Advocacy to verbally represent families in order to connect them with the services, resources and opportunities that they might need from both government and nonprofit organizations. Promoting social justice through the advocacy of new programs, revision of outdated policies, and expansions of underserving programs.
Strong ability to set boundaries to establish a work-life balance based on available time and resources with families and other professionals, to prevent burnout and maintain positive relationships.
Professionalism to constantly be learning and developing better ways to serve your clients and the community through classes and hands-on learning.
Physical Abilities/Requirements

Able to work with 0-8 year-olds in a physical setting, work on a computer. Must have valid driver’s license. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

Hours of Work & Compensation

$30 per hour, grant funded through June 2023. 24-32 hours a week, in person, at the Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center at Redway Elementary School.

Required Education and Experience

Experience in Social Work field or Family Systems support and 0-8 human development.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field.
