Election Day was designated as the Tuesday following the first Monday in November way back in 1845. Officials figured that farmers needed a day to get to the polling place in their county seats to cast ballots but they didn't want to interfere with church on Sunday, so Tuesday it was, and we still follow this weird tradition today.
