Gov. Jerry Brown signed a new bill into law last week, allowing Californians to use the first federally-approved drug made from marijuana.

The signed bill, AB 710, will allow California physicians to prescribe the drug Epidiolex,  an orally ingested CBD solution made by GW Pharmaceuticals. The drug was approved by the FDA in June for the treatment of severe seizures caused by rare forms of epilepsy.

The bill was authored by California Assemblyman Jim Wood, who serves Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino and Sonoma Counties.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that before the drug can’t be prescribed however, until it’s removed from the DEA’s list of Schedule I drugs, which Assemblyman Wood reportedly expects will happen in the coming months.
