Weed Feed: Congressional Committee Approves Bill Increasing Number of Marijuana Grows Used for Scientific Research

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee that oversees federal drug enforcement passed a bill on Thursday requiring the Department of Justice to issue more licenses that permit growing marijuana for scientific research.

Forbes reports that a lone farm at the University of Mississippi has been responsible for providing all the researchable marijuana in the U.S. for the past 50 years, drawing complaints from scientists about the quality and availability of research-grade pot.

The bill almost wasn’t approved after a kerfuffle about a piece of the legislation preventing those with prior drug convictions from working these licensed grows. The bill was ultimately passed with the restriction anyway, with those in favor of the bill reportedly saying that they hoped to amend the passage about criminal history at a later date.
