Update from Whale Czar/HSU Prof Dawn Goley: As of this evening, the juvenile gray whale trapped in crabbing gear outside the South Jetty was disentangled, thanks to the efforts of Goley, HSU grad student Alison Fuller and Northcoast Marine Mammal Center Medical Director Dennis Wood, along with California Department of Fish & Game and the U.S. Coast Guard. “A real team effort,” Goley said. She added that although free, the young whale suffered significant injuries. “We’re hoping for the best,” she said.
