The selection committee awarded all four local schools who advanced to the North Coast Section football playoffs, with a home game in the first round.

The Ferndale Wildcats are the top seed and the St. Bernard’s Crusaders are the number four seed in the Division 5 bracket. The Wildcats have qualified for the post season 17 years in a row.

In Division 4, the Arcata Tigers are seeded fourth while the Fortuna Huskies are the number seven seed. The Huskies have earned a berth in the playoffs six straight years.

The opening round games featuring local teams will be played on Saturday, Nov. 10. Ferndale and St. Bernard’s play at 1:00 p.m. while the games involving Arcata and Fortuna start at 7:00 p.m.

SMALL SCHOOL RANKINGS

1) Ferndale (9-1) - The Wildcats scored 35 unanswered points to rally from a 20-6 first half deficit to beat the Crusaders, 41-20. Ferndale owns a 25 game winning steak against St. Bernard’s.

2) St. Bernard’s (6-4) - The Crusaders will host the fifth seeded Berean Christian Eagles without the services of senior quarterback Christian Mello, who was ejected from the final game of the regular season.

3) South Fork (4-6) - Despite winning three of their last four games and becoming eligible for the playoffs, the Cubs did not receive any good news on Selection Sunday.

4) Hoopa Valley (2-8) - Junior quarterback Joey Wittlake threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns to help pace South Fork to a 34-24 road victory over the Warriors.

LARGE SCHOOL RANKINGS

1) Arcata (9-1) - The Tigers return to action after their bye week, when they entertain the 13th seeded Moreau Catholic Mariners at the Redwood Bowl.

2) Fortuna (7-3) - The Huskies took advantage of three Eureka turnovers and jumped out to an early 17-0 lead en route to a 27-8 road win over the Loggers.

3) Eureka (4-6) - Head Coach Mike McGuire and the Loggers decided not to apply for the playoffs even though they were eligible because of their 2-2 Big Five Conference record.

4) McKinleyville (3-7) - Senior running back McLean Johnson ran for three touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to help lead the Panthers to a 35-18 victory over the Del Norte Warriors.

5) Del Norte (2-8) - The Warriors lost their last six games to miss the NCS playoffs for the first time since 2009.
