UPDATE, 10:48 a.m.: Lt. Steve Knight of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office informs us that the bomb squad is still at the site as of right now. “When they deal with this stuff, it tends to go real slow,” he said.

One unexploded shell has been found. They’re looking for the second one, Knight said.

Knight said that the explosives are at a construction site near the foot of H Street — the location of an old shipyard.

###

UPDATE, 10:13 a.m.: The T-S reports that the evacuation is being prompted by the discovery of unexploded World War II-era shells at the corner of I Street and Waterfront Drive.

A large section of Old Town Eureka is being evacuated as we speak. Kathy Michaels, owner of Strictly For The Birds, says that police have closed First and Second streets between E and I, or thereabouts, and are evacuating buildings.

Michaels says her understanding is that unexploded ordnance was found at the soil remediation project currently underway down by the waterfront.
