UPDATE 9 p.m.:

On March 17, 2014, at 5:15 pm, Humboldt Area CHP received a call of a hit and run traffic collision involving two small children with injuries in Hoopa, CA.  Officers arrived at 5:30 pm to find that 19 year old Justy Masten of Hoopa, CA, had been driving his Mitsubishi Eclipse northbound on Cal Pack Road in Hoopa, CA.  Two 6 year old children, Rocky Reed (driver) and Lorita Schaeffer (passenger) were riding on a Honda 50R motorcycle on open public land.  The children crossed Cal Pack Road directly into the path of the Mitsubishi and were hit.

Masten immediately stopped and attended to the children including going to a nearby house to call for help.  The children’s parents arrived and both children were transported to Mad River Hospital in Arcata, CA with minor injuries.

DUI as a factor in this collision remains under investigation.

There appears to be no merit to the original call that this was hit and run.
