Last night, an overflow crowd witnessed the crowning of a new Rutabaga Queen for 2014, Glitterina. This year’s 3 contestants competed in Ball Gown, Q & A, A Water Crossing (which takes a level of creativity in the Bayside Grange), and “Talent.” “It was a very tight competition this year,” said Katie Texas, president of Kinetic Universe and one of this year’s judges. Glitterina’s water crossing was particularly creative and entertaining employing a large entourage dressed as luminescent jellyfish and one helper dressed as the Madaket. The all female rock group The Lost Luvs kept the crowd dancing until late in the evening. This year’s Rutabaga Princesses are Tootsie Rolls and Gold Digga’. Queen Glitterina will reign over the Kinetic Sculpture Race beginning next Saturday in the Arcata Plaza.

I caught up with the new queen moments after her crowning and grabbed a quick interview with her backstage.
