Humboldt Bay Fire press release:

Just before 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2014 Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a report of a structure fire in an apartment on Harrison Avenue in Fields Landing with three engines, a ladder truck, and two chief officers. Upon arrival the first arriving engine reported smoke and flames visible from a first floor apartment in the two story building. While fire personnel were extinguishing the fire, the building was searched to confirm that all occupants were out. One occupant was experiencing difficulty breathing because of smoke inhaled while she was leaving her upstairs apartment. Firefighters on scene provided oxygen, and the occupant was transported to St. Joseph Hospital to be checked.

The fire in the apartment was extinguished quickly, but the fire was found to have extended into an exterior wall. Firefighters opened the wall to confirm that all fire had been extinguished. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $30,000, with an estimated $300,000 of property and contents value saved.

The afternoon fire was reported by the occupants of the second story apartment when they saw smoke drifting past their windows. Humboldt Bay Fire urges residents to have working smoke alarms mounted in their homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental at this time.
