The deadline for filing candidacy papers for the Humboldt County Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District’s Board of Commissioners was Friday at 5 p.m. But since incumbent District 1 Commissioner Aaron Newman didn’t file by that cut-off time (he told the Outpost that he “decided to sit this one out”), the deadline for that district only was extended until today at 5 p.m.
And very, very shortly before that final-final deadline, Shelter Cove Eureka resident and Emerald Growers Association Executive Director Hezekiah Allen filed his candidacy papers. (He didn’t actually leave the County Elections Office until after 5:30 this evening.) Two other candidates had already filed to run for the 1st District seat: realtor/rancher Larry O. Doss and commercial fisherman/custom cabinetmaker James L. Roberts, both of Eureka.
In District 2, incumbent Commissioner/oyster farmer Greg Dale of Fortuna is facing a challenge from Nick Angeloff, a Rio Dell resident and owner of Redwood Empire Services, a business consulting firm.
And in District 5, incumbent Commissioner/fisheries biologist Patrick Higgins of McKinleyville has two challengers: Susan Rotwein, who owns Cap’n Zach’s Crab House in McKinleyville, and Kyle Visser, the young entrepreneur who founded Shred Aware (formerly Shred Tec).
The Outpost will have a more in-depth look at these races tomorrow er, Friday.
