UPDATE, 11:42 a.m.: From Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay:

At 5:07am this morning the Coast Guard received a request for assistance from the Humboldt Bay Fire Department to aid in locating a person in the  water between Indian Island and Woodley Island, Eureka, CA. The Coast Guard responded quickly with a 29 foot Response Boat from Station Humboldt Bay which located an unconscious individual in the dark eight minutes later. The Coast Guard initiated CPR and transported the individual to awaiting emergency medical services.

The Coast Guard, Humboldt Bay Fire and several other local agencies were called to rescue a man from the bay this morning. They were ultimately unsuccessful.

Shortly before 5 a.m., emergency responders received a call from a boat somewhere near Woodley Island. The caller said that he had found his friend in the water, and was unable to get him out.

The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office tells the Outpost that the deceased was a 61-year-old male. He was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital at 5:47 a.m.
