UPDATE, 9:50 a.m.: From Humboldt Bay Fire:

At 5:33 a.m. today, Monday, January 19, 2015, units from Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a reported structure fire at 3055 Pigeon Point Rd. The first arriving fire engine reported heavy fire from the garage of a two story, single family residence. There were initial reports of people trapped in the residence. The crew attacked the fire and began searching for victims. Additional units arrived on scene and were able to determine that all of the occupants had escaped the blaze. Within minutes of arrival, the garage collapsed and fire had spread to the second story of the residence.

The crews battled the fire for an extended period of time. They were hindered by concealed void spaces within the structure. This allowed fire to spread throughout the residence. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm and additional units from the Arcata Fire Protection District responded to the scene to assist. A recall of off-duty Humboldt Bay Fire personnel was initiated to staff reserve apparatus for coverage of the rest of the Humboldt Bay Fire jurisdiction. Samoa-Peninsula Fire District also responded and assisted with coverage of the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $400,000 at this time. One firefighter sustained minor injuries requiring medical attention during the blaze. Humboldt Bay Fire is still on scene at the incident at the time of this release and will provide additional information when available.
