Friends of the Outpost from across middle Humboldt are reporting that they are witnessing ashes falling from the sky, our harvest from the scary fire situation in the mountains to our southeast. While your correspondent has not witnessed this phenomenon at his current perch in Eureka, the Outpost’s Ryan Burns confirms that blackened scraps of our former forests have fallen on his barbecue party.

And he is not the only one. Reader Anne Sahlberg reports:

I live by Eureka High School - is that ash that’s falling from the sky?  I’m wondering if anyone else has bits of black falling on their cars?

Reader Sarah Kinnamon:

Where is the fire at? I’m in myrtle ave and my car is covered in ash! And the air smells heavy like a fire! Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Reader “Mark”:

Ash is falling in bluelake at this time from lightning fires inland.

Reader Aaeon “Ferrocious: Ferro:

It’s a little spooky and ill try to get some pictures but its raining ash in blue lake.

Likewise, we have seen posts from across the Facebooks from Fortuna, Arcata, McKinleyville and elsewhere confirming the rain of ash. And for the record, in the time it has taken for your correspondent to put this post together, the sky has turned noticeably more yellow and black flecks have landed on the screen.

Ruth lake fire grows with the rise of the winds surrounding more than half the lake.
