UPDATE: Five Eleven alerted people via Facebook that the fire didn’t close the restaurant:

As many of you may have seen, we had a bit of a hiccup with our wood fried oven earlier today. Everything has been taken care of and we are open for business offering everything except pizzas tonight!

And today:

We’re still standing after yesterday’s excitement. Nothing major, but could have been a lot worse. We will be open at 5 for service tonight (even pizzas)!

Dark smoke and hot embers billowed from the rooftop of the Five Eleven Bar & Grill spilling out into the streets of Old Town Eureka around 3:45 p.m. this afternoon.

Arcata resident James Neve said the entire street was filled with thick, black smoke.

“It looked like it was gonna be a big fire,” Neve said. “The smoke was just billowing out, and then nothing.”

Multiple engines were dispatched and Humboldt Bay Firefighters could be seen extinguishing embers from the rooftop.

Chief Ken Woods said the fire started in the restaurant’s chimney and was quickly extinguished upon arrival.

“We had a fire in the chimney of the wood oven, and we put out some hot embers that were on the roof,” Woods said.
