UPDATE: Tom Mattson, Humboldt County’s director of public works, issued the following statement in response to an inquiry from the Outpost:

The watering was performed by our contractor for new sod he placed there. We have turned the water off and will work through our contract to deal with the revegetation in time of drought. The rest of the lawns have not been watered in a month, but we will soon be starting on Tuesdays and Thursdays as a board member is getting complaints about how bad it looks.

That is an impressively lush lawn, isn’t it? Deep emerald green. Sturdy, robust blades. And nary a weed in sight. It’s the kind of lawn worth breaking some rules for, and it looks like that’s exactly what the county was doing today.

As the good citizens of Eureka know full well, the city recently issued a list of watering rules designed to ease us through the state’s historic drought.

Rule No. 1?

“Watering is only allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends. No watering landscapes or grass on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays.”

And rule No. 3?

“No runoff when irrigating with potable water.”

We called up the City of Eureka to see if maybe the county property was exempt from the rules. Paige, an assistant in the Engineering Department, said nope, she hasn’t heard of anyone being exempt.

Who could be behind such a rebelliously beautiful lawn?
