UPDATE, 10:20 a.m.: Fire investigators were just called to the scene.

Humboldt Bay Fire Battalion Chief Kent Hulbert tells the Outpost’s Andrew Goff, on scene, that no one was at home when the fire erupted in the garage of the home. The garage was “well involved,” in Hulbert’s words, by the time firefighters arrived.

No other structures were threatened.

A garage burst into flames in Eureka’s West Side neighborhood a few minutes ago, quickly spreading to the attached home and prompting a large-scale response from firefighters.

The flames were quickly extinguished, but traffic control is still in place on W. Del Norte Street between Albee and Spring streets while firefighters mop up. The home has suffered extensive damage. Smoke continues to pour from the building, and firefighters are attempting to vent it through the roof.

A Calfire engine was called in to Eureka to help cover calls while Humboldt Bay firefighters attacked the blaze. PG&E has been called to the scene to disconnect gas and electricity to the building.

No word yet on the cause of the fire. We’ll update when we know more.
