Vernon Steeves was born Aug. 1, 1925 to George and Ethel Steeves in McKinleyville. Vernon passed away at the age of 92 on Nov. 24, 2017 at his home, surrounded by family.

He leaves behind his daughters Patty Wilbur, Nancy Shamberger, Carol and Lynn Lourenco; grandchildren Paula Exline, Tom Wilbur, Andra and Keith Stringer, David and Molly Lourenco, Robert and Susan Shamberger ll, and Don and Tiffany Shamberger; great-grandchildren Malachi, Nacisohn and Noah Exline, Sydney, Samantha and Sophie Stringer, Nolan and Mason Lourenco, and Robert (Trip) Shamberger lll; nephews Bob Steeves and Elmer Steeves Jr; nieces Charlene Togstan, Barbara Jones and Betty Shamberger; and sister in law Pauline Davis.

He is preceded in death by his parents George and Ethel Steeves; wife Tootsie; brothers George, Everett and Elmer Steeves; son-in-law Robert Shamberger l; and foster sons Albert and David Bartow.

In his life he worked as a truck driver, log scaler, volunteer fireman, town marshal for a while and for 45 years a commercial fisherman with his boats CrackerJack, Barbara R and Paula Jo. Through out his life he has made many friends – way to much to list all, but here are a few: Bucky Jackson, Larry Swingseth, John Davis Jr, Ernie Watson, Ron Morton, Ike Ganfield and Ron Boone.

Vernon love to hunt and fish. Many time you will catch him camping with his family. In 1979 Vernon moved to McKinleyville, where he later retired. When his wife Tootsie passed in 2009 his daughter Nancy moved in to help take care of him until he passed.

A special thanks to Tiffany Shamberger for the special care she gave him, Hospice of Humboldt for the extra care and to those who held his hand in the last week of his life. Vernon will be laid to rest nest to his wife at Greenwood Cemetery in Arcata. There will be no funeral services, but those wishing to donate, burial expenses can be sent to Carol Lourenco @ 103 Fairview Ferndale, CA, 95536.
