UPDATE, 12:45 p.m.:

Humboldt Bay Fire Chief Bill Reynolds tells the Outpost they estimate the blaze burned about half an acre of grass and that firefighters are now doing fire control in the area.

There’s no word on the cause of the fire, but Reynolds notes that this area sees a lot of foot traffic.

Outpost reporter Andrew Goff reports that the new park at the foot of Del Norte Street is unharmed.

Firefighters are reportedly monitoring the fire; setting small fires and allowing the blaze to burn itself out.

Goff reports that firefighters appear to have the blaze under control.

Humboldt Bay firefighters are currently battling a grass fire that’s spreading along a small peninsula at the foot of Del Norte Street in Eureka.

According to scanner reports, the fire is a quarter acre in size with a high rate of spread.

Outpost reporter Andrew Goff is on scene and reports that firefighters are laying down hoses in the area.
