Joia M. Simpson

Multiple Minneapolis-area media outlets are reporting on the death of 19-year-old University of St. Thomas student Joia Simpson who fell from the 10th floor of a downtown apartment building during a Halloween party.

Simpson graduated from Arcata High School in June of this year. 

Emergency personnel were called to the Bridges Apartments in Minneapolis’ Dinkytown neighborhood near the University of Minnesota just before 1 a.m. where they found Simpson’s body on the ground outside the building, according to reports. Simpson’s death is believed at this time to have been accidental. Watch WCCO-TV’s report below.

The University of St. Thomas issued a release concerning Simpson’s death offering counseling services to its students. Simpson’s parents told the university they’d like people to remember their daughter’s “beautiful smile.” Read the release below: 

 

Tragedy has struck our St. Thomas community, again.

We are mourning the loss of first-year student Joia Simpson, who fell from the 10th floor of The Bridges apartments in Dinkytown early Thursday morning, Nov. 1.

Joia was a native of Bayside, California, and was interested in studying business. Her family most wants people to remember her beautiful smile.

This has been a difficult few weeks for our campus community. Counseling and Psychological Services and the Center for Campus Ministry are available for students, faculty and staff who desire additional grief support.
