The Humboldt State crew team will host the 36th annual Blue Heron Redwood Sprints Regatta at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center on Saturday, giving local fans their one opportunity to see the team in action this year.

HSU track and field will also be in action at the Redwood Bowl on the same day, hosting a meet and capping a busy weekend for the school’s sports teams.

Racing at the regatta will begin at 8 a.m., with teams from Mills College, Pacific University, California Maritime Academy and Chico State making up the field for this year’s event.

“We are excited that we will be hosting some of our friends and colleagues in rowing,” HSU head coach Robin Meiggs said.

Fans can find the best viewing at the foot of D, E and F Streets in Eureka. Races will be adjacent from the Warfinger Building and the finish line is set at the Adorni Center.

“We are a much smaller regatta this year as it falls squarely in spring break for us and is earlier than we normally host,” said Meiggs. “The schedule is more spread out this year as we are still in an active fishing/crabbing season. We want to make sure we can run races and not interfere with our local fishermen friends.”

Track and field head coach Sarah Ingram, meanwhile, said she is looking forward to hosting this weekend after a string of consecutive road trips.

“We’re always excited for any opportunity we get to compete here at home in the Redwood Bowl,” said Ingram. “It’s our home turf and it’s special for the athletes.”

The meet will kick off Saturday at 9 a.m. and will include a ceremony at 11:45 a.m. honoring the program’s nine graduating seniors before running events start at noon.
