Marilyn “Mickie” Mckenzie

Mickie passed away in the early morning hours of December 25th, with her daughter Darla by her side. Mickie was born in Eureka, attended grammar school in Korbel and Crannell and graduated from Arcata High in 1940. Following graduation, she attended French Hospital School of Nursing, in San Francisco, where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. Homer and Mickie were married January 27th, 1944. Mickie worked in San Francisco and then moved to Norfolk, Virginia, (where Homer was serving in the Navy), continuing her career in nursing. After the war they moved and settled in Eureka where Mickie worked as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital. Mickie retired after 20 years as a medical transcriptionist at Mad River Hospital.

Homer and Mickie had three children Mike, Diane, and Darla. Homer and Mickie enjoyed spending time at Clear Lake and Trinity Lake, boating and picnicking with their children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren have many happy memories of stories she read to them and cookies she baked. After Homer’s passing, Mickie joined High Noon Lionesses and enjoyed travelling to events with her sister Janie, brother-in-law Ralph and good friend Golden. She also loved attending her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events, whether at home or on the road. Mickie was a dedicated Warriors fan and enjoyed watching games on TV, she also was a member of the Karuk Tribe and enjoyed attending the Elder’s Event with her grandson and his wife. When Mickie was 70, she attended an AC/DC concert with her daughter and grandson commenting, she thought she was the oldest person there. She may have been right! Prior to passing, Mickie was looking forward to the birth of Eric’s daughter Erika’s baby.

Mickie is survived by daughters, Diane (Frank) Toste and Darla (Eric Foster) McKenzie and sister-in-law, Jean McNeill, grandchildren Joseph (Jen) McKenzie, Jeffrey (Angie) McKenzie, Rachel (Kevin) Ward, Tahnia (Sean) Campbell, Ami (Jason) Cueto, Heather Bottino, Cody and Caitlin Langlois, great grandchildren, Paul and Dellard McKenzie, Bryce Ward, Colton and Kaylin Campbell, Anthony and Michael Toste, Alex Jimenez, Samantha and Marcus McBride, Lacie and Mia Cueto, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mickie was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Maude McNeill, stepmother Lois McNeill, husband Homer, son Mike McKenzie, brother Bob McNeill, sister Janie Moon, brother-in-law Ralph Moon, grandson Frank D. Toste, great granddaughter Rhianna McKenzie, son-in-law Paul Bottino, and several nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID, there will be a graveside service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
