How will raising the Minimum wage affect the cost of a hamburger

I understand raising the minimum wage will help some people but it seems to be that more people will be harmed. The cost to a lot of small business and even larger ones will go up. The only way the businesses can make that up is raising the cost of products or services. A $12 meal now becomes a $14 meal and an employee looses their job. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Thanks for your question, Steve.

The Plight of the Hamburgler

Hi there folks. My name is Patty, and I stink like french fries no matter how many showers I take. I work for Mickey, not the Mouse but the D’s.

I put together 100 burgers every hour. My boss pays me the minimum wage. If Mickey could he would pay me less, but the law won’t let him. 9 dollars divide by 100 hamburgers means that it costs 9 cents a unit for me to make the burger that he sells. When the fair wage passes and I start making $12 an hour and will be able to pay rent for a change I will continue to work hard, stink like french fries ,and make 100 burgers per hour, except now the burgers will cost 12 cents a piece. My being able to afford rent for a change and have a little extra money to by some fabreeze will cost you 3 cents each on your $3 burger with cheese, a raise of a measly 1%.

You pay 3 cents more, and I get a more livable existence. Won’t you spend 3 extra cents so that a person like me, a single mom struggling to support my child, can live better?

Humor aside, this is the real math and real people will truly benefit from The Eureka Fair Wage Act, Measure R. Reports and research show that prices go up a maximum of 1% after similar measures have been enacted in other places. See our website fairwages.org under “Get the Facts.” Also, Measure R has a small business exemption- only large employers will pay the higher wage.
