Petroleum Incident in Eureka

A new hazardous materials incident involving petroleum has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near merchant/business in Eureka at around noon today.

About six gallons of a substance described as “gasoline” were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

Rp states that an unknown individual was attempting to siphon gas from one of their vehicles. The individual punctured the gas tank causing a release of 6 gallons onto the asphalt. Responding fire department placed down absorbents and the release was collected into 55 gallon drum. A contractor will be picking up the drum for disposal.

This was the 19th hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Eureka area this year and the 36th petroleum spill in the county overall.
