‘Turkish Star Wars’ (1982)

Arcata Theatre Lounge

Jaw-droppingly insane … a film that makes criticism moot –Film threat

Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam (The Man Who Saved the World) (1982) is a Turkish adventure film commonly known as Turkish Star Wars because of its notorious use of unauthorized footage from Star Wars (1977) worked into the film. Two space cadets defending Earth in a space battle are shot down on a desert planet where they find a cantina full of rubber masked aliens, people living under slave conditions and an evil wizard seeking the ultimate power to take over the world. Although the movie borrows some background footage from Star Wars as well as Sodom and Gomorrah (1962) and The Magic Sword (1962), the plot is mostly unrelated. And Star Wars footage was not all that was “borrowed” from Western movies for this film. Popular movie soundtracks were also used including Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) (used throughout the film), Moonraker (1979), Flash Gordon (1980), Planet of the Apes (1968), The Black Hole (1979) and Battle Star Galactica’s Cylon Centurions. Side note; the film is entirely in the Turkish language (except for the Cylon sound clips).
