Humboldt Peacemakers Prize Awarded

First Presbyterian Church of Eureka

Twenty years ago the Eureka Interfaith Fellowship (formerly Eureka Ministerial Association) presented the first Humboldt Peacemaker Prize to Yer Thao. Mr. Thao created interventions with local youth to mitigate their attraction to gangs. His work was successful enough that many of the local gangs forming at that time faded into insignificance. This year we will present the tenth Peacemaker Prize to Elizabeth Smith who is current Director of Boys and Girls Club in Eureka and has worked for the Club for more than twenty years. Other nominees for the Peace Prize will also be recognized for their contributions to our community. They include: 1. Azra (“Andy”) Sehic 2. Scott Sterner 3. Rex Bohn 4. Andy Mills Since the award is biennial, there have been nine subsequent winners of the Peace Prize. Recipients through the years are: Art Eliazeras (1998); Christopher Evans (2000); Betty Chinn and Rose Baker (2002); Russ Shaddix (2004); Simona Keat (2006); Sam Oliner (2008); John Shelter (2011); Byrd Lochtie (2014). The public is invited to the award ceremony which begins at 7:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Eureka (14th and J Streets). The ceremony will include music, a brief recognition of all the nominees for the Peace Prize, presentation of the award to Ms. Smith and fellowship after.
