Lifetree Film Fest

Creative films from around the globe will be showcased at the International Lifetree Film Fest. The overarching theme of the festival’s short films is people who are “doing life” or “doing good.” According to festival planners, audience members will have an opportunity to choose their favorite film of the evening.  This is a Red Carpet event.  Dr. Ken Owens of HSU will be the host.  A dessert reception will follow. The event is sponsored by Lifetree Café—a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting. Lifetree Café is hosted weekly at Campbell Creek Connexion, corner of Union and 13th St., Arcata on Sundays at 7p.m.

This year’s Film Fest had close to 150 submissions from 74 countries.  Six of the final award winning films were from the United States. The only international film finalist to be selected as an award winning film was “The Last Race,” which was from Australia. Films that will be featured at the Lifetree Film Fest include:

-    And What Remains (Directed by Marc Havener)
A universal story of regret, of reconciliation, and of hope, “And What Remains” explores the complexity of a father’s relationship with his son.

-    Born for the Stage (Directed by Matt Ehling)
“Born for the Stage” documents the efforts of a Minnesota organization to produce the play “Hairspray.” It highlights the unexpected pressures, acclaim, and attention that the actors, their families, and the organization experience. Cameo appearances in the film include John Waters and Marc Shaiman.

-    En Route (Directed by Colin Levy)
“En Route” follows the life and career of an airline pilot fated to die in a terrible crash.  In reverse chronological order, we trace the events and influences that shape his life and define his career until a pivotal moment in his childhood that changes the trajectory of his future.

-    Saving Valentina (Directed by Eli Noyes)
Filmed by his wife from the bow of their small boat in the Sea of Cortez, Michael Fishbach narrates their accidental encounter with a humpback whale entangled in a gill net and about to die.

-    Breaking Through: Memories of the Tuskegee Airmen (Directed by Matt Morgan)
surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen reflect on their lives, their experiences during World War II, and their return home.

-    The Last Race (Directed by Jeremy Cumpston)
An intensely emotional half hour “race-against-time” drama that follows a group of people all facing their own death or the certain, imminent death of their nearest and dearest.

-    Dream Job (Directed by Brian Massey)
“Dream Job” follows a promising young man to a job interview, but with all the obstacles he encounters, his day doesn’t quite turn out as expected.
