Organic Seed Production and Variety Improvement Course

Join Organic Seed Alliance (OSA) and the Ecological Farming Association (EcoFarm) for this daylong course on organic seed production and variety improvement on November 15, 2015, in Watsonville. OSA’s Jared Zystro and Steve Peters will lead this training for farmers and agricultural students interested in learning fundamental skills for developing and adapting varieties to their organic farms. Topics of instruction will include: the biology of seed production; seed harvesting and cleaning; choosing appropriate seed crops for your farm and climate; maintaining genetic integrity through isolation distances; conducting variety trials; and basic on-farm breeding techniques. The day will also include a hands-on seed cleaning demonstration with a variety of seed crops. The course will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at the Springfield Community Grange located at 10 Werner Road in Watsonville, California. The course fee is $35.00 per person, and includes the daylong training and a light lunch. Please email any food allergies or dietary restrictions organizers should know about to Steve Peters at steve@seedalliance.org. This training is intended for farmers and agricultural students. Events will take place regardless of the weather and participants are encouraged to dress appropriately. Prior experience in basic seed growing is recommended.
