John Matthews’ Guest of the Week: The coach of the McClymonds High School football team talks with John Matthews and Tag Wotherspoon, voice of The Ferndale Wildcats, about the racist incident that took place at the season-opening match in Ferndale. A Ferndale fan near the sidelines is alleged to have taunted a McClymonds player with racial epithets.

Coach McCauley has high praise for Ferndale generally and Wildcats coach Kim Jorgensen in particular; he says the leader of the Ferndale squad is like a “father figure” to him. But he has deep misgivings about the actions of the particular fan or fans that subjected one of his players to racist taunting, and he believes that actions should be taken to prevent a repeat of this incident.

Wotherspoon notes that this is the second straight game in which a Ferndale fan is believed to have directed racial abuse at an opposing squad. He believes that game officials should have done more to address the issue in the moment.
