The CHP site reported a major injury accident early this morning.  Sgt. Doug Tupen of the California Highway Patrol  explained that dispatch had received reports of a pedestrian with a backpack standing in the roadway near Samoa around 4:30 A.M.  Officers attempted to locate the individual but were unsuccessful.

Then, at 5:05 this morning, the same individual was struck by a GEO Prism north of G Street in Arcata near the Gannon Slough. The driver was fine but the pedestrian, Ethan Pinney, a 40 year old Eureka resident, sustained major injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka.

The officers are still investigating the situation but it is believed that Pinney was under the influence of alcohol.
