Oops. Your Lost Coast Outpost apologizes for slacking on our South American country drug policy updates. We’re usually pretty good on this.

While we were stoned at the wheel, you all probably heard the news that, as of this week, Uruguay — if you’re unsure where that is, see LoCO‘s handy map — is now the first country to virtually across-the-board legalize marijuana. Smokin’, growin’, sellin’. The works.

OK sure, it’s legal, but really how much can you have? According to reports we’ve read, when the law is fully implemented in April, Uruguayans may legally grow six plants in their homes and/or form smoking clubs that can grow up to 99 plants. Citizens over 18 who register to be listed on a government database may purchase a maximum of 40 grams (about an ounce and a half) per person from  licensed pharmacies. Sorry, weed tourists. Foreigners aren’t toke eligible.

If you want to read more, this is not hard news to find. Also, they discussed the ins and outs of Uruguay’s historic move on NPR’s Morning Edition, which you can listen to below.
