Arcata Police Department press release:
On September 29th, 2013, at approximately 2:45am, Arcata Police Officers responded to 100 Westwood Center for a reported assault.
Upon the officers arrival they located the victim of the assault who had suffered numerous contusions, abrasions, and a broken right leg. The victim reported he had just come from a party in the 1500 Blk of Stromberg Ave where two people had been stabbed, and was walking home. As he approached Westwood Center he was engaged by another group of men that had also come from the same party. An argument ensued between the victim and one of the suspects that resulted in a physical altercation. During the fight, a second suspect joined the first man in assaulting the victim. The assault consisted of one of the suspects kicking the victim in the head and body while he was on the ground. Ultimately the two suspects fled the area on foot.
The victim was transported to Mad River Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.
Over the following days, investigators were able to ascertain the identity of both suspects involved in the assault and they were taken into custody without incident.
Joseph Latu Jr., 20, and Evan Thomas Gray, 19, both from Arcata, were arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of 245(a)(1) PC, Assault With a Deadly Weapon.
