The Eureka Police Department has taken one man into custody following a commercial burglary attempt at Angelo’s Pizza in Eureka early this morning.

Friends of the Outpost started writing just before 8 a.m., asking for information on the large police presence at the popular downtown eatery. The Outpost’s Ryan Burns arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and spoke to Sgt. Steve Watson, the arresting officer sergeant on the scene.

The EPD showed up after a commercial burglar alarm sounded at the pizza parlor, which is located scant blocks from EPD HQ. Upon arriving, they found signs of entry — the glass front door had been shattered — and surrounded the building.

A suspect then attempted to flee out the back door, where he was quickly taken into custody by an officer stationed there. The suspect was Dennis Allen Turnbull, age 34 of Eureka, and he was booked into custody on California Penal Code Section 459 (Commercial Burglary).

Watson told Burns that Turnbull was found in possession of several items believed to be taken from the pizza parlor, including a canvas money bag and tap handles apparently removed from the restaurant’s beer station.

The EPD is currently exploring the possibility of another suspect having been involved in the crime.

Turnbull had been booked into the Humboldt County Jail on robbery charges on July 11.
