Sgt. John Beauchaine of the Rio Dell Police department tells the Outpost that he stopped Brinson at the 300 block of 2nd Avenue around 11 a.m., and searched him as a result of his parole.

During the search, it was discovered that Brinson was in possession of drug paraphernalia and stolen property, including a cell phone and credit cards.

“He was seated in the back of my patrol car in handcuffs. Because it was a warm day, I had the window cracked five or six inches,” Beauchaine said. “He was able slip the handcuffs through his legs and under his feet. Then he reached his hands outside the window and was able to unlock the door.”

Beauchaine said he was likely going to release Brinson after issuing him a citation, but the 29-year-old turned a minor offense into a felony.

“He was just going to be issued a citation because I couldn’t get a hold of his parole officer,” Beauchaine said. “So he turned a misdemeanor cite and release into something much bigger.”

Ferndale and Fortuna officers assisted in the search, but were unable to locate the escapee.

Brinson has brown hair and blue eyes. He is 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds.
