After a lengthy period of dry, smoky conditions, Mendocino County’s fire-plagued Redwood and Potter Valleys may see some rain next week.

Eureka’s National Weather Service office reports that showers are possible in the area starting Wednesday night. Chances of rain will continue in the area until at least Friday.

Rain would be a welcome sight for firefighters and residents threatened by the ongoing wildfires. According to the most current calculations, eight people have been killed and 314 homes have been destroyed by the Mendocino Lake Complex Fires.

In total, the active fires have burned 36,500 acres and are 22 percent contained.
