James Garcia has been one of the few bright spots for College of the Redwoods baseball in what has been a disappointing season so far.

The sophomore from Lake Elsinore has been leading the way both on offense and on the mound.

Garcia is batting a team-best .313 at the plate, the only CR player averaging above .300, and has also hit a team-high six doubles.

On the mound, Garcia has two of the team’s three wins, with an ERA of 4.74, best among the CR starters.

The Corsairs did break out of a nine-game losing skid at Shasta on Saturday, and will be hoping to carry that momentum into this weekend’s three-game series at home to Lassen.

The games have been pushed back to Saturday and Sunday because of the expected rains.

The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m., and a single game on Sunday, starting at 2 p.m.

All three games will be played at Bomber Field across from the Redwood Acres in Eureka.

The CR men have struggled to a 3-19 record, including a 2-10 mark in the Golden Valley Conference.

Charles Morgan and Gannon Cyphers each also have provided some positives for the Corsairs.

Morgan, out of Vista, is hitting a team second-best .293, with four of CR’s eight stolen bases, while Cyphers, a 2018 Eureka High grad, is hitting .275 with three doubles.

Andrew Enwiya has a team-best 10 RBIs, while Garcia has eight.

The Corsairs are hitting just .203 as a team.

CR women on the road — again

The College of the Redwoods will play on the road again this weekend, and also have had their games pushed back.

The CR women will play doubleheaders at Siskiyous and Shasta on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The games are the conference openers for the Corsairs, who are 4-10 on the season and riding a six-game losing streak.

Playing every single game on the road so far has not helped matters for the Corsairs, who aren’t scheduled to play at home until early next month.

All six teams in the GVC currently have losing records, with Siskiyous 4-12 and Shasta 6-8.
