4. The Gardens of Melanie and Ron Kuhnel

Next up, were the many gardens at Melanie and Ron Kuhnel’s three-acre parcel. Referred to as the Zanone Gardens, this particular part of the tour is a world unto itself, with many different sections to visit.

After passing the “white garden” with many flowering white blooms, we visited the “railroad garden,” complete with train tracks, railroad ties and signage.

As we followed the path, we came to a me-sized doll house where we visited with Raggedy Ann and Andy.

Meandering on, we stepped onto a board walk passing through the skunk cabbage fernery. The vegetation was gigantic and made me feel like a little elf wandering through the forest. We eventually popped out at the top of the garden to find blooms of roses, lilies, dahlias and a very healthy veggie garden.

Passing the veggie garden, we moved over towards the bee boxes, where a couple volunteers offered honey-tasting from three local Eureka gardens. It was amazing to taste the differences in flavor among the three jars of honey. We reveled in the magnificence and importance of these busy pollinators. Without them, of course, this garden tour would bee impossible. I was especially happy to learn that the Humboldt County Bee Keepers Association will respond to calls about swarms or bee nests that require removal. Let’s avoid poisoning the bees please!

A koi pond sits at the top of the property, feeding the creek that runs through the fernery. The lotus blossoms are just beginning to bloom!

A well manicured hedge garden sits just below the second house on the property. A lovely place for a spot of tea. Jodie and I enjoyed a lovely chat on the balcony overlooking this hedge garden.

Scones and tea were served while visitors enjoyed relaxing in the sun (and shade). Trombones @ Four provided the entertainment, playing instrumentals (see video).
